Understanding EV range standards: WLTP, EPA, NEDC and CLTC
Every market tests electric cars differently, so the same car can be advertised with very different range numbers. Converting to a common standard makes comparisons fairer — but all figures remain estimates, and real-world range depends on speed, air-conditioning use, load and traffic.
WLTP (Europe)
A four-phase cycle covering low to extra-high speeds, including charging losses. More realistic than NEDC, still slightly optimistic versus everyday driving.
EPA (United States)
The most conservative standard. It blends city and highway cycles and applies a correction factor, so EPA numbers are usually closest to what owners actually see.
NEDC (legacy)
An older, gentle laboratory cycle that has been retired in Europe but still appears in older brochures and some regional specs. It is the most optimistic of the widely used standards.
CLTC (China)
The current Chinese standard, weighted towards low-speed urban driving. CLTC figures — commonly quoted for Leapmotor models in China — are typically the highest of all four.
